The Village of Hommlet is sold as the quiet start to a larger evil. A village, some locals, a ruined moathouse nearby. Most tables treat it as a tutorial. You meet the NPCs, buy rope, and walk to the dungeon. That is not wrong. It is incomplete.
Hommlet is a holding that has not declared itself yet.
The village has a mill, a trader, a smith, and people who already have opinions about who should run the place. The moathouse is not random ruins. It is the old fort that used to control the road. Clearing it does not make you heroes who can leave. It makes you the people who now sit on the only defensible ground between the village and whatever is stirring under the temple. Someone will notice the payroll.
5E runs this as Act One of a plot. ACKS sees a domain seed with factions that do not reset. The trader has a stomach for what you bring back. The local authority has a reason to prefer the status quo. If you plant a stronghold here, you are not inventing a campaign. You are finishing one the module already started.
You can treat Hommlet as a shop and move on.
Or you can admit the village was always a border holding waiting for someone reckless enough to decide who pays the garrison. The temple can wait. The road cannot.
