Somebody Has to Walk the Hex

Parties remember dungeons. They forget the blank paper between the town and the hole.

The explorer exists because ACKS thinks that paper is the game. Somebody has to live on the road without being a knight, a priest, or a burglar. Somebody has to read a hex, keep a company fed, and come back with a report that is not a rumor. In the thin games, this is a background: Outlander, plus a speech about the forest. In ACKS it is a class with a job.

Wilderness is not a travel montage. It is where domains are born and where they die of neglect. An explorer is the prototype of a border lord: light on ceremony, heavy on movement, useful before there is a throne. When the map is still empty, he is the reason the empty is not theoretical.

I ran too many campaigns where the wilderness was a loading screen with wolves. No wonder domain play felt like a different product. We never practiced owning distance. We only practiced rooms.

You can fill the party with specialists of the dark and hope a road appears.

Or you can bring the person whose endgame is not a vault or a temple, but a string of hexes that finally have names because he walked them until they did.
